"Be the Leader."
My story of leadership begins like this: When I was ten years old, my dad walked into my room and saw a picture on my wall with a caption that read, "Follow the leader." "Don't follow the leader, be the leader!" my dad exclaimed. "Dad, look at the picture." I responded. Now, the picture was of Jesus carrying the cross. Not really a "be the leader" kind of moment. My dad paused, laughed a little, and said "Well, whenever you can, be the leader." Those words have stuck with me every since. My Work.
My work in leadership took off at Southern Utah University, where I served as Managing Director (20-21) and Artistic Director (21-22) of Second Studio. In these roles, I led a board of twelve peers in producing three plays, one musical, and nine monthly variety shows. As Artistic Director, I led the organization with determination as we returned to in-person productions during the pandemic, creating and maintaining safety measures to protect our artists and audiences. I mediated between actors and designers, developed procedures for the production of our monthly events, and supported the board in developing new outreach strategies. I also served as Assistant Director to a Mainstage production of Into the Woods (2021) and Director of Silent Sky (Second Studio, 2022). As a solo director, I had to make the difficult decision to replace one of our actors only three weeks before the show opened and maintain cast and crew morale through unexpected illness, prop mishaps, and more.
In both 2021 and 2022 I was recognized as the Outstanding Student in Human Values, from 2021-2022 I served as the Grace A. Tanner Center Scholar, and in 2022 I was named the Southern Utah University Student Commencement Speaker. Post-grad, I was invited to be the Soccer Coach and Advisor for Southern Utah University's production of The Wolves. I previously held this role in 2020, and although the show did not go on due to COVID-19, I had been recognized as a the Broadway Coat Recipient. This award is given by the director to an individual who demonstrates exemplary leadership through the production process. In 2024, I taught a cast of thirteen and their four understudies how to play soccer and assisted in developing the staging of the production. I helped them overcome physical and mental challenges by providing support, integrating their feedback, and demonstrating dedication to the craft.
I currently work at Southern Utah University as a Financial Wellness Coordinator. In this position, I spearhead three campus-wide outreach campaigns throughout the year to reduce the number of students dropped for non-payment, assist with four outreach campaigns to students with financial holds, and meet individually with 200+ students each semester to provide financial literacy education. This role requires consistent communication with a diverse set of offices across campus, as well as assisting students in making impactful (and often difficult) financial decisions. Throughout all of these experiences, I have been challenged to navigate the balance between peer and professional relationships, to take my time in assessing situations, and hold myself and others accountable to our responsibilities. These experiences have allowed me to become a grounded, passionate, and intuitive leader who does not hold back from crucial conversations, but possesses the grace and tact to guide others to become the best versions of themselves.
Defining Modern Leadership
Modern leadership encompasses an individual's ability to inspire, guide, and empower individuals or teams to achieve shared goals. Instead of relying of authority or hierarchy, today's leaders facilitate open communication, inclusivity, and personal growth within their organization. As the world becomes more inter-connected, the problems we are faced with become more complex. By responding to challenges with emotional intelligence, collaborative solutions, and confidence in oneself and their team, today's leadership generates effective and people-centered results.
